Our Story – Humble Beginnings to Global Connections
Regency Office Furniture is a family-owned and operated business proudly rooted in Akron, Ohio since 1940. Originally founded as Summervilles’ Inc., an office supply and furniture retailer, our journey began with a bold and trailblazing leader — Norma Summerville. Known across the region as "The Original Bad Girl of Office Furniture,” Norma broke barriers in business leadership and built a reputation for excellence, innovation, and fearless determination.
Under Norma’s guidance, Summervilles’ became a local powerhouse, winning numerous regional advertising awards and becoming the first retailer in downtown Akron to offer on-site store parking and an indoor furniture showroom. After Norma stepped down in 1987, her son, John “Skip” Summerville, took the reins and, in 1997, officially launched the Regency Office Furniture brand. Today, Skip and his son Aaron continue the legacy, combining timeless values with a forward-looking vision.
Over the decades, our company has expanded to include multiple sub-brands that meet diverse customer needs. In 2009, we introduced Niche, a home-focused furniture line designed for modern living. Soon after, we launched RGS Furniture, our dealer-exclusive division that ensures commercial buyers get personalized service and product variety tailored to their customers.
